Choosing the Right Air Conditioner
Things to Consider
Before you rush out and purchase an air conditioning unit for your home, there are a few things to consider that will assist you to determine what type of unit will best suit your needs and what size the unit needs to be.
Geographical Location
Not all units are suitable to all regions in Australia. Evaporative units do not work well in humid climates - so if you are in Queensland, this is not the unit for you.
Orientation of your House
Rooms that face East, West or North are likely to receive more sun than rooms that face South.
External Shading
External Blinds, Canopies or even trees can help to cut down the heating entering a room.
Internal Shading
Curtains and blinds are not as effective at keeping out the heat as external shading, however it can still have an effect and heavy curtains do a better job than thin blinds. Internal Shading will also assist in keeping the cool air in!
Windows and Glass
There are now many types of glass that can help keep out the sun and assist to make your home energy efficient. If you have an older house and don't want to upgrade all your windows, getting the windows tinted may be an option. Checking the sealing around your windows and minimising gaps will help reduce unwanted hot air coming into your home.
Insulation
Insulation in the roof, walls and floors will help to regulate temperatures.
Rooms
The number of rooms and size of the rooms will determine the type of unit that you require.
Which Air Conditioner?
Once you have the information about your house and your requirements, you can think about the type of unit that you need to do the job. There are a number of different types of units that are best suited to different requirements.
- Portable - if you have a small or single room and only require infrequent cooling but would like the option to relocate the unit.
- Wall - if you have a small or single room and require infrequent to frequent cooling.
- Split System - if you have a larger room or have multiple rooms that you want to cool.
- Ducted - if you have multiple rooms that you want to cool
Getting the right size is the next step. The output capacity is a measure of the amount of heat that will be removed from the rooms in your house by the air conditioner. As an approximate guide allow
- 125 watts (.125 Kw) per square meter of floor area to be cooled in living areas.
- 80 watts (.08 Kw) per square meter of floor area to be cooled in bedrooms.
